SCHOEPS MK 2 SERIES OMNIDIRECTIONAL CAPSULES W/ OPTIONS

Omnidirectional microphones - if constructed as single-diaphragm transducers, as all SCHOEPS omnidirectional microphones and capsules are - can be considered optimal due to their excellent reproduction of low frequencies and extremely low noise (with SCHOEPS as low as 11 dB(A)). The various types differ in the extent of their high-frequency response elevation, which compensates for the high-frequency losses in the diffuse sound field. Thus we offer both “free field equalized” and “diffuse field equalized” transducers as well as two in-between types.

There are 4 omnidirectional capsules, each with their own individual characteristics suited to different environments. Here is an explanation of the changes in the way Schoeps microphones are named and how each capsule differs:

MK 2 Omnidirectional Capsule

Omnidirectional pattern
Very flat frequency response
Corrected for a free sound field
For use close to the sound source (frontal sound)
Often preferred for relatively close miking of instruments, vocalists, etc.

MK 2H Omnidirectional Capsule, Mild HF lift for medium recording distances

Omnidirectional pattern
Mild high-frequency rise to compensate for losses at medium recording distance
Often chosen for “spaced microphone” stereo pickup and “Decca Tree” arrangements

MK 2S Omnidirectional Capsule, Slight HF lift for medium recording distances

Omnidirectional pattern
Slight high-frequency rise to compensate for losses at medium recording distance
For a very wide range of recording applications
Often preferred for “spaced microphone” stereo pickup and “Decca Tree” arrangements

MK 2XS Omnidirectional Capsule, Strong HF Boost (formerly the MK 3 Capsule)

Omnidirectional pattern
Diffuse-field capsule
For miking distances at which the predominant sound is no longer direct
Useful for relatively distant placement in reverberant environments – as a room microphone, for “spaced microphone” stereo pickup and in “Decca Tree” arrangements

Applications

Please note that there is some directivity at high frequencies due to the physics of sound wavelengths. Thus even with an omnidirectional microphone, it still matters which way the capsule is “aimed.”

The MK 2 is often used for acoustical measurement, an application for which it has gained a considerable reputation.

A mechanical adapter (type AMBK 1, from 20 mm to 1" diameter) is available for calibration with B&K devices. Please note that because of dimensional tolerances, only the nickel-finish version of the MK 2 can be used with this adapter.
